we're the coolest kids, we know

Photobucket
just for a moment, i'm going to shelve the visions of camel coats and murderously slim black cropped trousers that have been running rampant through my mind at full speed lately.

on this first leg of what's sure to be a long and interesting sartorial journey, i've found that even when the current trends on tap fit like a glove, i will always, always be partial to those sometimes gaudy, but never boring idiosyncrasies of the nineties - something to chat about with chloe sevigny if i ever get the chance, i guess.

my undying love for the decade has nothing to do with a lifelong appreciation for minimalism or anything like that. after all, i was only eleven years old by the time we weathered the y2k storm and while i've always loved fashion, i was no tavi at that age. instead, my devotion emerged by default. the nineties encompassed the bulk of my childhood, those magical moments that allowed me to soak up every bit of aesthetic information without judgment or anxiety of influence, and i've been trying to recapture that chimera ever since.

i love reading up on what's next as much as the next girl, but let me at a crop top, pair of overalls, oversized flannel, or scoopneck floral minidress, and you'll really see my eyes light up - extra points if i never got to/wasn't allowed to wear said piece back in the day.

given my almost irrational preference to the clothing of my own childhood, my latest journalism gig makes a lot of sense. starting this morning ('sup, scheduled posts), i'll be interning part-time at earnshaw's, a nearly century-old children's apparel trade magazine. this gig marks a couple of firsts for me: my first time writing about fashion on the production/sales side of things, my first real exploration of the children's sector of the market, and my first time working at a print publication (!). there will certainly be a lot to learn, but if my first experience with children's apparel was any indication, this may turn out be quite the well of inspiration for me.
