spread love, it's the brooklyn way

Photobucket
i was so excited to step out into truly summery weather yesterday that i actually had to refrain from skipping down the street. josie and i hit the american apparel flea market, though once i arrived, i realized that i already own so much aa that there was nothing i actually needed, even at insane discounts. also: almost got killed a couple of times getting too close to the bike lane on the brooklyn bridge (tourists walk far too slow),got my first mileage out of the new tila march bag, got happily caught in something of a sunshower (my favorite thing, despite my general disdain for most kinds of precipitation), almost saw transformers 2, finally opted for lemon over red velvet at sugar sweet sunshine, and got the most out of my last $25 dollar weekly unlimited metro card before the fare hike, ugh.

oh, and to marisa, who asked me about experience needed for internships: i stay busy during all of my summers, but i often find myself interviewing in situations where i have little position-specific experience. i tend to make a speaking point out of my inexperience, though, something like: "at my age, i have a ton of interest and energy that i'd love to dedicate to (insert industry), but limited experience, which is why i'd love the opportunity to direct that enthusiasm towards this position." good luck!

hello, lover

Photobucket
the blogging gods are not my friends these days. for starters, whenever i get home from my internship, i pretty much pass out until the next morning, leaving little to no time to post.. ever. secondly, my digital camera - less than a year old, mind you - has essentially quit on me.. no more flash, and grainy, poor quality pictures even in the daytime. but at the end of the workday, i was suddenly overcome by a can-do attitude, so here i am, dashing off a mini-post before sleep overtakes me yet again.

Photobucket
since my camera butchered these visuals, i've included a company shot.
unlike the blogging gods, the internship gods seem to have taken a liking to me. i was stunned yesterday when my editor told me i had received a gift and handed me a white shopping bag. digging through the burgundy tissue paper, i pulled out an envelope with the sweetest message above from tamara taichman, designer of the impossibly chic tila march accessory line, whose fall '09 collection i wrote about on the pipeline a little while ago. when i wrote the article, i remember thinking, well, that it was impossibly chic.. as in impossible for me to attain. as i glanced over her words and spied a sliver of brown leather, i'm pretty sure i briefly went into shock. i continued to freak out as i pulled out an absolutely gorgeous bonnie bucket bag in moka.. i swear, i could have stared at that beautiful bag for the rest of the day. i consider myself a very lucky girl, indeed - thanks so much to tamara taichman at tila march!

full disclosure: i haven't been able to stop listening to the new broadway cast recording of hair since it came out. also, "let the sun shine in" seems like a very appropriate sentiment, considering this endless monsoon we're having in the city.

heh, heh, heh - i still can't get enough of this. more hilarity here.

enjoy the rest of the weekend, kids. and don't forget to call pops tomorrow!

all i can say is that my life is pretty plain

Photobucket
ahh, t-shirts - too easy to live with them, can't live without them. i'm constantly telling myself i'm going to put a moratorium on tees and work on building up the rest of my wardrobe, and then i find another one that fits just so or has such a great color or image that i just have to go back on my word.

this time, i'm allowed to point the finger at my dear boyfriend, who stumbled across this sweet chip & pepper university tee. i take this as a sign that he's truly starting to understand my sense of style. i never, ever wear harvard tees at school, except to bed, but this one's vintage look and feel deserves an exception. the cut is straight and resembles a men's tee, just the way i prefer it, and he even had the presence of mind to buy it in a roomy size large for that oversized fit i adore. well-played, honey.

Photobucket
after prancing around the house in my new unbelievably soft tee, i returned to my regularly scheduled programming, but what happened next is no one's fault but my own. within five minutes of being online, i stumbled across the danny roberts 'girls in glasses' tee, which i've seen before on several occasions, but ignored as a result of my proposed moratorium. i guess you can imagine what happened next.. incorrigible, that's me. it arrived in the mail today, which was a bit of sunshine in an otherwise gray day.

speaking of which, the weather lately has been despicable. even my playlist is spelling out a not-so-subtle to mother nature. my mood will never clear up if the weather doesn't.

my 'i don't have to run' day

Photobucket
this weekend: wrapped up week two at the refinery, anti-prom, met tim gunn and austin scarlett, planning failure, an incredibly insane and outspoken doctor, toys 'r' us with mom fifteen years too late, acid mint toes, going away party for jennie, judging, irish accents, a new nickname, hella cigarette smoke, my name is a hit, megan fox meets john lennon with a dash of michael cera, the end of my lifelong lockdown?, sleepover at meg's, deep talks at dawn, chirping birds all night long, all in the family, air sex on youtube, cartoon network in bed, a bunny named langston, jealous dogs, huge breakfast, nap all day, watchmen revisited, finally seeing legally blonde (and the sequel), cat reunion. and tomorrow, the gears'll start grinding all over again. if we could just get some sunshine in the mix, i'll be a happy camper.

okay, so here are the facts.

friday, may twenty-second: my parents hit the square just as i finished up my last exam and drove me back to my house. sleep-deprived and irritable, i wasn't in the mood to deal with my mom's packing method of stuffing any handy object into the nearest container, so i told my parents to take off for a bit while i finished packing to go home. a couple of hours later, my mother showed up in my room, impatiently demanding to help me and speed up the process. i protested, especially since i knew i had to unpack and pack again for colorado a day later, and needed to know where i had put all of my stuff. my mother insisted, and began to start using her particular method of packing. a couple of hours later, i sent my parents off with all my stuff, saying i'd take a bus home the next day, noting that i had a few more things to put into storage and things to wrap up with house super.

saturday, may twenty-third: i packed the last of my things into a duffel, put my boxes into storage, gave my key to the super, and swept the entire room. after four hours on the bus, i got home and began packing for colorado. i noticed that i couldn't find a large bag in which i had placed all of my jewelry. i waited until morning to alert my mother, who looked everywhere and couldn't find it. she claimed she took all the bags i gave her, so there's no way it could have gotten lost. nevertheless, we still can't find the bag. i e-mailed my house super frantically, who replied that if it was found, it might have gotten into storage, but nothing is certain.

so as of right now, i have basically lost all of my jewelry. i still have some unpacking to do, and if it doesn't turn up here, i'll have to wait until school starts to be positive that it's gone missing, but the prospect is still pretty daunting. i'm trying to not think about the memories potentially lost in that bag - necklaces and rings i received at birth, gifts from cameron and other loved ones, gems found on vacation - by reminding myself that they're simply objects and i still carry the sentiment with me.

i've also been attempting to distract myself by thinking about crafting a more streamlined, edited jewelry collection. in all honesty, i don't wear jewelry all that often, and though i dabble in a little bit of everything, i'm truly enamored of dark colors, skinny fits played against oversized or draped, and simplicity, and an ideal collection of baubles would reflect that.

Photobucket
i'm most likely to accessorize my wrists - in fact, the only thing that escaped getting lost was my marc by marc jacobs 'veritas inlustrat' black leather bracelet, since i wear it day in and day out - so a solid roster of wrist adornment seems necessary. a high-low mix would be ideal, with gilded rubber bangles mingling with this prada beauty (i'm not a big fan of ostentatious labels, but i could make an exception for this).

Photobucket
stepping up the intricacy, but also maintaining a certain stark beauty are these gorgeous pieces by cheung lik from her and wear-and-tear line. these bracelets from her 'squeezed chains' collection have something harsh and industrial about them without losing a bit of their prettiness - i want pretty much every single one. and there's few things i wouldn't do for that weaving tape necklace.

Photobucket
speaking of necklaces, i had this long and thin rusting chain from h&m that i had tied around a vintage-looking key and loved to wear to add something delicate to whatever i was wearing. this necklace reminds me of that chain, except it's infinitely more precious (and i don't use that word too often).

Photobucket
and then there are the necklaces you can toss on to add something a little harder to an ensemble, like these chains. over a t-shirt or gown, it's a done deal.

there's a ton of other pieces that i'm dying to get my hands on, but it wouldn't be an edited collection if i didn't edit, would it? even so, pieces of the following ilk are also eligible: peace signs, two- or three-finger rings, old school hip-hop-inspired thick gold, and shoulder-dusting or otherwise outrageous earrings. oh, and did i mention that i also lost most of my handbags and all my hair accessories in the same bag? yeeeah, i'm pretty bummed, but i'm trying to move on.

jewelry. lost. voilà.

defined and refined

good news - refinery29 is amazing! i'd like to think i had a good first day, with one story up, and a couple more lined up for tomorrow. and with a whole day of work under my belt, i celebrated by going home and immediately falling asleep.. for six hours.

it seems no matter what i find myself doing each summer, i end my first day by taking an interminable nap. only problem is i wake up in the middle of the night, i.e. now, and can't get back to sleep. here's to hoping my sleep schedule corrects itself and soon, but until then, i'm glad to present the spring/summer '09 edition of disney makeovers - no, i haven't yet outgrown my disney obsession (never will), and no, neither has this blog.. past installments may be found here and here.

kim possible
a penchant for trendy mallrat hot spot club banana has got kim looking pretty tame these past few years. i mean, wearing cargo pants to save the world? really? i understand that function has to precede form in certain situations, which is why i suggest she tries on nicolas ghesquière's fantastically futuristic take on the pantsuit. in six colors, i'm sure she could give the old cargo pant/black crop top turtleneck ensemble a well-deserved rest. and if balenciaga's wares are a tad too experimental for her high school sensibilities, she could test drive abaeté's version of the classic color palette - the sheer black panels trade in banal for bombshell and can be punched up with badass accessories, like this bullet bracelet. in her personal life, kim isn't afraid of neons or her navel, which is why alexander wang's acid-bright looks are a perfect fit for her, as is this eye-catching dkny dress - never again will archnemesis shego win the battle of style.

Photobucket
lilo
okay, so she's young - that hasn't stopped tavi or arlo weiner from becoming fashion powerhouses, and it's not about to stop lilo either. she's all about embracing her hawaiian heritage in long, airy dresses with large prints - muumuus, if you will, without the negative connotations. well, i have one word for the little style maven: gucci. frida embraced the muumuu like no other this season, with tons of bright billowy gowns in diaphanous fabrics. i wouldn't try to force lilo out of what's worked so well for her in the past, instead suggesting a tweak in print or length, with some great and less expensive options from nasty gal vintage. and such a simple piece simply begs for bold accessories, in the form of a chunky bangle, large hat, beaded necklace, or age-appropriate bow. now if we could just get her buddy stitch to clean up his act..

violet parr
violet happens to be a seasoned veteran in the fashion industry, having inspired a portion of marc jacobs' fall 2005 collection, not to mention being the owner of a pair of legs that would make even the spindliest model jealous. while she ditched the all-black vibe for the end of the incredibles, donning a preppy pink polo-and-headband combo, i like to imagine that that was just for the cameras, and that she's currently doing the dark minimalist thing in ann demeulemeester blazers and tunics, and distressed sweaterdresses from alexander wang. the shoes would be all amazing, all the time, in black leather with interesting shapes and details, and the hair would be permanently situated directly in front of one eye, misshapes party picture perfect. did i also mention that in this scenario, we would also be best friends?

i guess i'll never feel completely ready, but here i go - first day at refinery29. keep an eye out for my byline?
